The Gardener
Sara Schurr grew up in Southern California. Her father was a gardener and his mother had grown vegetables and flowers commercially in Kansas in the early 1900's. Most of her Schurr aunts and uncles were passionate gardeners. She planted her first vegetable garden in 1985 and hasn't missed a season since. She spent the 1984-1985 school year attending courses in Ornamental Horticulture at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, OR where she took a year of Plant ID and courses in pruning, greenhouse practices and the like. That convinced her that she didn't want to be a commercial grower and she happily settled into being a home gardener.
The Woodsman
Walter Cooke worked for the US Forest Service for three summers in high school and college. He had thought he wanted to be a forest ranger but in the end opted to become an engineer instead. He now tends the woods at Winterhaven along with mowing the lawn, making compost, chipping up all our woody debris and designing things for Sara's seed starting efforts.
The Photographer
All the photos on this website were taken by Sara Schurr. Over the years she's graduated from an Instamatic to a 35 mm, to an early digital camera. Since 2008 she's taken her photos with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ4 which she loves! It has a 10x optical zoom and wonderful close-up macros that allow her to take pretty darned good flower photos. All photos on this site are copyrighted by Winterhaven Press. Please respect our copyright and do not copy the photos.
